Thank you for your interest in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The Department offers two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCpE). Our department also offers programs leading to Master's and Doctoral degrees in Electrical Engineering. All academic programs in ECE are designed to strike a balance between theory and practical knowledge. Electrical and computer engineering are highly collaborative fields involving areas such as electronic and electrical systems, electromagnetics, information processing, communications and networking, control systems, computer hardware and software, power and energy systems, optoelectronics, and microelectronics. Our current total enrollment exceeds 830 students, which includes approximately 585 students enrolled in two undergraduate programs and 250 graduate students, including 78 doctoral students. The Ph.D. program in ECE was one of the first doctoral programs to be offered at UNC Charlotte. Our graduate enrollment has consistently increased over the past decade, with the Doctoral program being the second largest and the Master’s program being the third largest on campus in terms of enrollments in those categories.
The department comprises 34 faculty members with excellent national and international reputations. Currently, there are three Distinguished Professors, two NSF CAREER awardees, and one IEEE Fellow in ECE. There are five broad technical areas in ECE: Communications, Control, and Signal Processing; Devices, Circuits, and Systems; Energy and Sustainability; High Performance Embedded Computing; and Power Systems. Our faculty are heavily engaged in sponsored research activities and scholarly publications. Some of the active areas of research in ECE include metamaterials, optoelectronics, quantum and nano structures, electromagnetics, power electronics, power distribution, controls, high voltage, renewable energy systems, wireless networks, computer vision, and high performance and embedded computing.
Our department is actively involved in the educational, research, and development mission of the recently formed Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC). We are located in the state of the art EPIC building that was built in 2012 with support from Industrial partners such as Duke Energy, Siemens, Westinghouse, AREVA, URS Corporation, and EPRI. ECE boasts of excellent laboratory facilities in multiple areas that include a cleanroom, materials lab, optoelectronics and spectroscopy lab, photovoltaic research lab, power electronics lab, power distribution systems lab, a Smart Grid lab, embedded and control systems lab, mobile and embedded computing lab, electromagnetic devices lab, the machine vision lab, two wireless communications and networking labs, a robotics lab, and others.
