What is Advising?
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering recognizes that advising is an integral part of a college education. Advising encourages students to think critically, seek out resources, and develop action plans. It provides students with the information and encouragement they need to take personal responsibility for exploring options and making decisions. Ultimately, advising allows each student to achieve a meaningful and successful educational experience.
Advisors in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are committed to supporting students throughout the development and achievement of their educational goals. The basis of this support is the foundation of an educational partnership between the student and his or her academic advisor.
Advisors often are thought of as the people who help students identify appropriate courses for their degree program. However, the course registration process is only a piece of the partnership that helps guide students along other paths of their educational development. It is understood that the advisor, while a valuable resource, is not the holder of all truths, but rather, will assist the student to discover and develop his/her educational plan. By working collaboratively with students, advisors help to ensure that they have a successful college experience.
Appointments and Niner Advisor System
Advisors are available throughout the academic semester to address student questions and concerns. Students can see their advisor during office hours or by scheduling an appointment.
During registration, students must develop an Academic Plan (using the Academic Plannning Form) for the upcoming semester and submit it to their advisor for approval. Students will have an advising hold until they participate in one of the following options to get registration approval:
Option 1 - Attend a group advising session: Students will receive a schedule for group sessions via email. Group sessions are great for students that want to discuss their plans with the academic advising staff before submitting their schedule for approval. [NOTE: Group Advising Session is not mandatory]
Option 2 - Meet with your Academic Advisor: Students may schedule an appointment with their advisor through the Niner Advisor System. You should complete the Academic Planning Form prior to your appointment. Once you have successfully scheduled an appointment with your advisor, you will receive a Confirmation email indicating your appointment. Check your confirmation email to determine if your advisor would like for you to submit your Academic Planning Form through Niner Advisor or if they prefer that you bring the form to your appointment. [NOTE: if your advisor does not indicate their preference, submit the Plan through Niner Advisor!!!!]
