What is Advising?

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering recognizes that advising is an integral part of a college education. Advising encourages students to think critically, seek out resources, and develop action plans. It provides students with the information and encouragement they need to take personal responsibility for exploring options and making decisions. Ultimately, advising allows each student to achieve a meaningful and successful educational experience.

Advisors in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are committed to supporting students throughout the development and achievement of their educational goals. The basis of this support is the foundation of an educational partnership between the student and his or her academic advisor.

Advisors often are thought of as the people who help students identify appropriate courses for their degree program. However, the course registration process is only a piece of the partnership that helps guide students along other paths of their educational development. It is understood that the advisor, while a valuable resource, is not the holder of all truths, but rather, will assist the student to discover and develop his/her educational plan. By working collaboratively with students, advisors help to ensure that they have a successful college experience.

Career Advising

National surveys given show that three out of four students have no clear career goals when they first enter a university. The ECE department would like to assist students to have a better roadmap towards successfully choosing their career choice. With this in mind, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has established a career advising system. Juniors and seniors in either the Electrical or Computer Engineering program may request that a career advisor be assigned to them. Such requests can be made via the online form below. Career advisors can help students to learn about the different specialties within the Electrical or the Computer Engineering discipline, and to better plan for the career of their choice.

What’s the difference between an Academic Advisor and Career Advisor?

The Academic Advisor is more of a complete student services generalist. The Academic Advisor assist students with schedule planning, understanding their major curriculum, and giving students valuable resources to achieve success. The Career Advisor is best at helping with specific concerns and questions relating to your major and career aspirations. The Career Advisor can help students understand how their academic and personal interests and abilities might relate to the career fields they are considering and how to form their academic and career goals accordingly.
